Sorry about the long blogging hiatus. I've just been so busy, and sort of uninspired. I need spring to come, or just some kind of change (maybe I'll dye my hair again?? ha). Anyways, I just watched Le Belle Personne, with my new girl crush: Léa Seyoux. I love the song playing in the video above (although don't watch the last 30 seconds if you plan on seeing the whole film!). The soundtrack is actually quite interesting (Nick Drake, anyone?). I think this is probably the fifth french film I've watched in the last month, and each just makes me more excited to go to college, so I can finally take french classes! (hey if Anna Karina can do it then so can I!)

I had quite a lovely (and very relaxing) weekend! I got around to ordering some new things I've been needing (a new backpack, skirt, and some socks!); I bought some lovely hydrangea and a peony to brighten my room; I took some photos of old farms and abandoned houses (I didn't know how many there were in Albany!); I got some delicious mushroom and pepper quiche at my favorite cafe; I spent some quality time with my bunny; I watched The Red Shoes, Old Acquaintance (yay Bette Davis!), and Young Frankenstein; I wrote out a little thank you note; did some knitting on my giant scarf (I hope I finish it before winter's over!); I dyed my hair a darker brownish red; and most importantly, I ordered a new camera for my birthday! (which means I'll FINALLY be able to take photos for this blog, and make it what I want it to be!). Oh, and tomorrow I'm starting ballet lessons with my friend!!

Since the New Year I felt like I needed a change. And if you ask any of my close friends, they know that usually means I want a new hair cut/hair style (nothing drastic! usually just a bang trim or some temporary hair dye). My go-to hair inspiration for the last 3-4 years has been Zooey Deschanel (as I'm sure is many bloggers' hair inspiration), but this morning I stumbled upon this great feature on Anna Karina, featured on Style.com. I was reminded of how much I love her, and her hair, and decide I was in need of a nice red undertone and trim (but maybe not as short as the first photo?). I know, not much of a difference between her and Zooey's hair cut, but I'm anxious to go back to a reddish brown!

BLACK SWAN

I apologize this blog is slowly turning into a place where I just brag about the beautiful movies I watch. That being said, yesterday I saw Black Swan with Natalie Portman, and can honestly say it was one of the most exquisite and intense movies I have ever seen-- and because of that I can say it's definitely in my top 3 favorite (modern) films. Besides the fact that you leave the theatre feeling like your head it about to implode on itself, everything on screen kept you gripped, entranced, and on the edge of your seat. Every scene and every moment was carefully thought through, and everything felt like it had a certain purpose to the film, and contributed to the eerily beautiful masterpiece that it is. I love watching films that are not only an interesting story line, but absolutely stunning as well, and everything was very simple and tastefully done. The scenes I found most beautiful were the ones of just her in the studio, or warming up. There's a certain kind of dark purity her character holds in the movie that's completely irresistible to watch. That being said some of my other favorite images had to be: the ballerinas; the studios; Natalie's white dress (oh my god), pink coat, makeup, and dressing room; and of course the final production at the end. I was even more excited to find out parts of it were filmed at my brother's college SUNY Purchase (where I'm also applying for art!). But really, I can not speak more highly of it.

I know I say this about every movie, but seriously, PLEASE go see this. I promise you will not regret it.

HOWL

I just got back from seeing Howl at The Spectrum (where I had the most amazing nut brownie and cup of hazelnut coffee), and can't help but feel utterly inspired (why does this always happen to me every time I see a new movie?? hdgksgfzgfk). I was so happy James Franco read the poem out loud throughout the movie (although I'm unsure if it was the whole poem?), since I only had time to read like the first three lines before I left. I really loved the way Ginsberg's poem Howl flowed, and all the different emotions it conveyed. At times I was laughing, and others in total shock. I also loved how the movie mirrored the poem to his life-- although a part of me wishes I knew more about his poetry, and more specifically Allen Ginsberg, before walking in. Actually, I wish I knew more about poetry in general so I could understand/talk more about the specifics, but I guess that's something that comes with reading more! (new years resolution?) What I did love most though was how parts of the poem didn't make any sense at all (at least literally). I have to completely agree with what Schorer testified about the poem in the court scene (which I believe was taken word for word from what was actually said):

Prosecutor: I presume you understand the whole thing, is that right?
Schorer: I hope so. It's not always easy to know that one understands exactly what a contemporary poet is saying. . . .
Prosecutor: Do you understand what "angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night" means?
Schorer: Sir, you can't translate poetry into prose. That's why it's poetry.

My favorite part of the movie though had to be the animation that went along with poem (I guess this is why I'm going to be an art major?), even though I wish I read the poem in its entirety beforehand (I'll definitely be snatching a copy of it from Barnes & Nobles sometime soon though!) Anyways, I highly recommend seeing it before it leaves theatres!

Jules et Jim is definitely my favorite French New Wave film so far (although it takes place circa WWI), and could possibly be one of my favorite movies of all time. It was just so beautifully made, and so classic yet quirky at the same time. I loved everything about it from the dramatic relationships (HOW ARE YOU OK WITH THE FACT THAT YOUR BEST FRIEND IS DOING YOUR WIFE), to the characters (I will always love Jules best, and Christine could possibly be my favorite female character of all time), to the clothing (so many pretty white dresses and country side sweaters!), to the narration and dialogue (too quotable and poetic), to the way it was filmed (you get all that interesting French New Wave cinematography, but without the crazy technicolor lights). Not to mention, when I went on wiki I found there are so many films/shows that reference this movie such as Amelie, Pulp Fiction, and Gossip Girl, so it's probably good to know! I definitely recommend this movie (clearly), even if you aren't a french foreign film junky. And I would've bombarded this post with film stills but it really deserves to be seen in action (plus there were too many great shots of the country side that it would take me forever to find/upload!).

SWEATERS

Like most people on blogger, this season I've been obsessed with big, chunky, knit sweaters. Whether they're fisherman-knit, fair isle, or animal print (need!), I don't really mind. The only problem is that most mainstream stores are selling these sweaters from about 40 to even 100 dollars. What I suggest? GO TO GOODWILL. Seriously, last weekend my friend and I scoped out the boys' and mens' section and found a plethora of cute, Cosby-esq sweaters for $5 each! They're the perfect thing to throw on during these cool and windy days. I know I'll be going back as winter comes near!

ANNA KARINA

I don't think I've confessed my love for Anna Karina on here yet... so I thought I'd do a post! My brother reminded me of her yesterday, when he mentioned A Woman is A Woman was on netflix play instantly, (so clearly I had to watch it immediately). She's single handedly convinced me to go back to my cat-eye makeup (although maybe not as intense), and justified keeping my full-bangs (which I've sported on and off since the 9th grade) for at least another good 6 months.

The French New Wave has always really interested me (especially the actresses involved like Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve, Jean Seberg, etc). I love everything about france in the 60s-- from the cinema, to the music (Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg, Françoise Hardy), the yé-yé movement, and of course the fashion! Anyways I think I'm at the beginning of a new french-foreign film kick, and will probably be going through Godards films about as fast as I can go through a bag of herseys dark chocolate. Next on the list: Pierrot le fou. If you have any suggestions, let me know!
**Oh and this post reminds me of an article I wrote about 60s french fashion icons for my school newspaper about a year ago! If you want, you can read it here! (although I've clearly left out a few important icons... how naive of 11th grade me...)

I've never been much of a "fall fashion" person, but after looking at the clothes online at Zara, I've been longing for knee-length jean skirts, corduroy pants (and shorts!), native american print cardigans, and warm colored dresses. Sadly I don't have any money (I can't wait till I have a job), and the closest store is about 3 hours away.... so in the meantime I'll be day-dreaming about apple picking, drinking hot cups of cider, and watching the leaves change!

Yesterday I took some photos of a farm for my AP concentration, and I was absolutely blown away at how they turned out! It was perfect lighting, and all the animals were super corporative (except for some of the feral cats, who just gave me dirty looks). I can't wait to start drawing some of these sheep! I don't think it was until I saw the new Dear Creatures collection that I finally became excited for fall to roll around. As much as I've enjoyed wearing florals, pastels, and white frocks, I love the idea of slipping on a simple black dress with tights again! And after seeing this collection, I think I'm going to need to get a white, polka-dot dress, as well as a new, comfy peacoat. oh!, and I may have to try to recreate that perfect floppy, black bow hair accessory. And I'm also still on the lookout for an over-sized, vintage, olive green utility/military jacket (I think olive is soon going to be my favorite color to wear this season). And maybe I should pick up a tube of red lipstick while I'm at it? Oh jeez, the list goes on and on...

WILD STRAWBERRIES

Lately I've been on a bit of a foreign film kick. My netflix queue is slowly being consumed by films such as Pandora's Box (1929, love Louise Brooks!), and Amélie (2001, which has a beautiful soundtrack). More recently though, I finished watching Wild Strawberries (1957), which was, in the simplest sense, lovely. The plot was very basic-- about an man learning to accept old age and death, and takes place in a single car ride, where he's confronted by multiple dreams about his past. It was so beautiful and inspiring that I had to take some film stills of it to upload onto my flickr!

Maybe its just me but there's just something about (older) foreign films that are so beautiful and refreshing; especially today where so many movies have to either be loaded with CGI effects, or "3-d", in order to convince the majority of the public to pay to go see it. Although, of course, I'm probably being a bit cynical because I can't afford the extra money to see it...

Lately I have been really drawn to different stones and minerals (fueled mainly by my new favorite blog, and my love for the natural world). Much like flowers, I find it fascinating that something so uniquely beautiful can be found in nature, so you could imagine how excited I was today when I stumbled across these lovely oil paintings, by Carly Waito. I'm amazed at how real and life like the paintings look-- if only I could see one up close! Until then though, I will be spending my days searching through various etsy stores, looking for the perfect amethyst necklace, to fullfill my worldly cravings.

EDWARD SHARPE & THE MAGNETIC ZEROS CONCERT

About a week ago I went and saw Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros; and I can confidently say it was the best concert I have ever been to. Up till now I had never seen a music group so appreciative of their fans, and so genuinely happy (and surprised) by the amount of people who showed up to support and listen to them. The lead singer, Alex Ebert, even came off stage a couple times just to dance, hug, and shake hands with people in the crowd. At the very end he got the people to sit around him and sing along and snap their fingers to his more mellow song, Brother, which was beyond unbelievable. I recently read this review of the concert which I think sums it up much better then I ever could-- but if you're willing to spend the night engross in the love, peace, and zeitgeist of the late 1960s, I highly recommend seeing them live!

I just finish my art camp and Sage college last friday. It's sad to see it end, but I'm so so glad I did it! I think the fashion design class really helped me become more comfortable with my sewing machine (I made that peter-pan collared shirt pictured above from scratch!) and the figure drawing class really helped me improve my technique and forced me to work faster (which is good, because I work terribly slow.) Ah! I feel like I start off every post apologizing for not being a better blogger! I've just been so so so so busy! For the last week I've been attending a summer art program at Sage college! I'm taking the fashion design course in the morning, and then figure drawing course for college credit in the afternoon. It's so exciting! Today I finished reconstructing this vintage, short sleeved, blue gingham vintage dress I had into a strapless one with a bow (and buttons on the back)! I'm really happy how it came out! So this post probably isn't exactly what you imagined it might be about based on the title... Although talk about college is practically consuming my life right now, this post is about the 1927 silent film, College, starring the witty Buster Keaton! Everything about this film was so cute and adorable. I loved the basic plot line, of a boy trying to win over the girl of his dreams. What surprised me most was how much I fell in love with the all sweaters the college students had on; whether it be striped, embroidered with an initial, or just a simple neutral color. I think that's something I'll have to stock up for this fall!!

KATE SYLVESTER S/S '10

The second I saw this S/S collection by Kate Sylvester, I fell in love with it's simple, sweet, and relaxed feel. The image I posted above is exactly how I've been wanting to dress this past week (light dresses, bare legs, long satchels and, if lucky, with a bouquet of flowers!). The collection is definitely making it rounds in the blogosphere (which I guess is now an actual word??), so I won't repost all the photos from the lookbook, but will kindly advise you to take a peak if you haven't already!

UKULELE

Yesterday I got a new ukulele, and haven't been able to put it down. I've been playing the ukulele (aka learning chords to my favorite songs) for about two years, and am still just as much in love with the instrument now as I was then! I've been really fascinated by old photos of people playing ukulele, and even came across this great set on flickr, which features a bunch of old photos with interesting looking chaps playing even more interesting looking instruments. So, I thought: why not write a (very brief) exposé of the uke, so everyone can appreciate this little fella a bit more?

The Ukulele

The ukulele originated as a Hawaiin interpretation of a instrument called the cavaquinho, brought over by the Portuguese in the 19th century. It wasn't until the 20th century that the ukulele gained great popularity in the United States. Before WWII, the uke was taken up by vaudeville performers like Roy Smeck and Cliff Edwards. The uke also became an icon of the Jazz Age, as well as accessible to amateur players by the 1920s. Musicians like Elvis Presley and George Harrison helped change the image of the uke in the early 1960s; although shortly after, it declined in popularity. It wasn't until the 1990s that the ukulele gained its popularity once more. Since then the uke has been sported by (some of my favorite) artists such as Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, Beirut, Zooey Deschanel, and Noah and the Whale.

SUMMERTIME INSPIRATION

Sorry for the lack of blog posts lately-- I promise I'll do a better job this summer! I've sorta been spending my days very selfishly: reading Virginia Woolf by the pool, watching silent films, convincing my parents to buy me a new uke, going on late night walks, etc. Lately though, all I've been thinking about are pastels, denims, cotton white dresses, and clogs (as you can probably tell based on the last, erm, 15 posts of mine). I'm happy to say the Zara June '10 collection channels all of this and more! (the leather bags!, the lace! the gorgeous long hair!).

Some of the pieces in the collection also remind me a bit this girl via Mr. Newton (who's outfit and hair I'd love to emulate), and of Picnic at Hanging Rock, which I eventually got around to watching about a week ago. I still get excited when a still from the film pops up on my tumblr feed! If you haven't seen the film yet, you must (it's on netflix play instantly)! The movie itself is a little spooky, but the wardrobe for it is perfect for summer time inspiration!

I first came across these stills from the short silent film, Sunnyside, via this lovely tumblr! It was made in 1919, and features the great Charlie Chaplin! Luckily for us, someone upload it to youtube, so you can watch it here! The New York Times quoted: "There is cleverness in "Sunnyside" and good pantomime, but, also, too much slap-stick." This is quite alright by me!

ARMY RUCKSACK

After seeing Twenty-Seven Names "Twelve" collection (specifically this photo via rag pony), I've been on the hunt for army/military backpacks (or more specifically-- "rucksacks") to replace my old, black, H&M school bag. So far I've found a few on etsy and ebay, but most are priced at 100+ dollars and have a frame on them (which I'm not sure how easy they are too remove?). One things for sure though; I'll need to stock up some on pretty white dresses this summer so I'll have something to pair it up with!

U.O. MAY '10 CATALOG

I didn't think it was possible for me to love an U.O. catalog as much as I did the Early Spring one... but oh by golly gee I was wrong. Everything in this May catalog is perfect. Where do I begin? Maybe I should make a list? I'm in love with the nerdy black framed glasses, high waisted shorts, pastel colours, simple striped shirts, chambray skirts, floral and lace dresses (actually... make that ALL the dresses), two-tone oxfords, knee-high socks, straw hats, and the most wonderful sailor inspired Fletcher by Lyell romper. I also love with the whole layout and backdrop, which reminded a lot of the Talula S/S '10 look book, featuring plenty of candles and roses, as well as old, gastby-esq interiors.

Now I would copy and paste every picture from the catalog on here, but I have a feeling that would be a little excessive, so why don't you check it out for yourself!!

I don't know whether my blogger hiatus has been due to the fact that school has been controlling my life, or that I haven't been inspired much lately... Regardless!, one thing that I have been doing is listening to Joanna Newsom's The Milk-Eyed Mender album. I remember listening to her about 3 years ago but not really getting into it. I think her voice is just one of those things you need to get used to before you can really enjoy it. Of course this video did help, as well as her incredible interview in issue ten of Lula. But as far as the album goes, I think iTunes did a great job of summing it up! I know it's cliché, but this album does not disappoint!

I had to repost the photos from Twenty-Seven Name's new summer collection. Everything seems to be so simple and feminine-- I'm absolutely in love! Ah, I hope my summer is composed of cute white cotton and lace dresses, and lavender high-waisted shorts!! If anything the colours themselves are inspiring. I love the mix of the white with the pastel lavender (my favorite colour), and the navy blue. I'll definitely be referring back to the photos when these summer rolls around!

I've been itching for some Swedish Hasbeens for a while now. And every time I see the Alexa Chung for Madewell collection, I can't help but picture how fun it would be to pair up these cute brown sandals with grey socks (or even the neutral coloured ones with pastel socks!). The only question is how willing I am to cough up $140 to fulfill my silly imagination... (of course it's not THAT silly, right?)

A BEAUTIFUL DAY

Today was absolutely wonderful. This morning I watched East of Eden, and am now completely convinced James Dean is one of the best looking men I've ever seen. Then soon after I went antique shopping and bought a bunch of frivolous things that I don't really need but were too lovely to pass up, such as a couple necklaces, a tin of old buttons, and a feather (pictured above!). I also got the new issue of Lula, which I can't wait to read!!

Afterwards my two best friends and I walked down to the plaza where I bought a rose at my favorite flower shop. It got up to the high 70s and was the sunniest it's been this year! Finally, to end this perfect day, my friend and I went to Coldstone and shared a delicious ice-cream filled with fresh strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. I think its safe to say the carefree spring I've been missing is finally here!!

I've had a nasty cold for a couple days now, and all I want to do is watch TCM screwball comedies, curl up in a blanket, and drink hot tea. I just found the Lyell Early Spring '10 look-book and I couldn't be more thrilled. Emma Fletcher is by far my favorite designer; everything her hands touch is pure beauty.

Last year I went through a bit of a Sylvia Plath phase after I read her only novel The Bell Jar. After that I picked up about as many of her poems as I could, and even had the chance to do bio project about her for my english class. I haven't read much of her stuff in a while, but I came across this quote the other day (along with many other inspirational quotes) which immediately made me run to my bookshelf and whip out some of her old poems.

July 1950-- "I may never be happy, but tonight I am content. Nothing more than an empty house, the warm hazy weariness from a day spent setting strawberry runners in the sun, a glass of cool sweet milk, and a shallow dish of blueberries bathed in cream. Now I know how people can live without books, without college. I was going through my old Lula mags and I came across this photo editorial I fell in love with from the Spring/Summer 2009 issue. Although I wasn't particularly inspired by the clothes, I was really blown away by the overall soft, old timely feel of the photos (and Katy Dron's amazing ringlets, but that's a whole other story). Lula never disappoints!

U.O. EARLY SPRING CATALOG

I was SO happy to come home today with Urban Outfitter's Early Spring catalog waiting for me. The photo-shoot is absolutely lovely, and I'm pretty sure the whole collection is the epitome of how I'd like to dress; simple, playfully colorful, with a vintage-esq twist (and the floral prints definitely don't hurt!!).
Maybe it's because I was born in late March (so I'm a little bias), but early spring is definitely my favorite "season" (if you can call it that). I think part of it is because it's sorta like that awkward transitioning season-- and I can kind of relate? It's a very still, serene time; your left with the remnants and memories of the cold winter, and looking forward to a new and hopeful spring. I think it's really very beautiful, and Urban did a great job of summarizing the exact feelings, tones, and textures of it (or at least of what I think it should resemble). So well done Urban, well done. I wish to have much of this collection in my closet in the near(ish) future.
